Set within 13 acres of rolling countryside in East Devon, Burrow Farm Gardens is widely regarded as one of the finest gardens to visit near Axminster and Honiton. Designed to provide year-round colour and interest, the gardens combine sweeping lawns, mature trees and expertly planned planting that evolves beautifully through the seasons.

From vibrant spring displays to rich autumn colour, there is always something new to discover, with views stretching from the summerhouse across the gardens to the surrounding Devon landscape.

Woodland Garden

The Woodland Garden is the oldest and most atmospheric part of Burrow Farm Gardens, centred around mature rhododendrons and an ancient field maple that inspired the garden’s creation in 1963. This peaceful area follows the contours of the former Roman clay quarry and is rich in seasonal interest.

Visit in early spring to see the dramatic yellow skunk cabbage (Lysichitum americanum), followed by carpets of bluebells in May. With its mature tree canopy and naturalistic planting, the Woodland Garden is a favourite with plant lovers and those seeking a tranquil woodland walk in Devon.

The Millenium Garden

Created in 2000, the Millennium Garden is a formal, colour-themed space that provides strong structure and year-round visual impact. A gently flowing rill draws visitors down through the garden to the formal pond, creating a calm and reflective atmosphere.

In spring, the steps are framed by beautiful wisteria, while the traditional stone gazebo offers wonderful views across the surrounding countryside. This elegant area showcases the more formal design style within Burrow Farm Gardens.

The Rose Garden

The Rose Garden offers a charming and intimate space to stroll and enjoy classic summer fragrance. This beautifully planted area combines old-fashioned roses with complementary herbaceous perennials to provide long-lasting seasonal colour and interest.

Originally developed in 1985 to make the most of a narrow section of the garden, the space is centred around the elegant stone statue known as The Shy Maiden, which is attractively surrounded by drifts of catmint (Nepeta ‘Walker’s Low’), creating a soft haze of blue through the summer months.

The Rose Garden is particularly rewarding in early and midsummer, when the roses and underplanting are at their peak, making it a favourite stop for visitors exploring Burrow Farm Gardens.

Terrace Garden

Easily accessed from the main drive, the Terrace Garden is a well-established, formal area filled with relaxed cottage-garden style planting. Structured by stonework, gravel paths, steps and elegant fastigiate pear trees, the garden combines strong framework with abundant seasonal colour.

Visitors can pause in the sheltered bower to enjoy the vibrant planting displays, which make this one of the most colourful and uplifting parts of Burrow Farm Gardens throughout the summer months.

The Anniversary (Grasses) Garden

Created in 2010 to celebrate 50 years of Burrow Farm Gardens, the Anniversary Garden (often known as the Grasses Garden) is renowned for its flowing ornamental grasses and late-season impact.

Grasses sway gently above the sunken path, while carefully chosen perennials create a striking colour theme of pinks, blues and purples. This area comes into its own from mid-summer into autumn and is especially popular with visitors interested in contemporary naturalistic planting.

Azalea Glade

Azalea Glade is a tranquil and enchanting corner of the gardens, created in 2007 from what was once a bramble patch. Today it is one of the most atmospheric woodland areas at Burrow Farm.

In spring, the glade bursts into colour with azaleas and rhododendrons, while ferns, primulas and choice bulbs thrive in the dappled shade beneath the trees. This peaceful area is particularly popular during the spring flowering season.

Wildflower Meadow

The two-acre wildflower meadow is one of the most special seasonal highlights at Burrow Farm Gardens. Carefully managed to encourage biodiversity, the meadow is home to an increasing number of native wildflowers and orchids.

Over 250 wild orchids have been introduced after being rescued from other parts of the garden, and the display continues to improve each year. In early summer the meadow provides wonderful colour and far-reaching views across the rolling East Devon countryside.
