Welcome

The first thing to mention with regard to disabled access is that we are on the side of a hill and that at 13 acres the gardens are quite large.  The question of how wheelchair friendly is the garden is therefore very difficult to answer but we will attempt to give you all of the information here.

Firstly, if you have a good offroad buggy and the weather has been good (ie the ground isn't saturated) then you will be able to get around almost all of the garden.  Although there are steps in some areas of the garden these can mostly be avoided by taking alternative routes.

Wheelchairs and smaller fold up buggies are a more difficult question to answer.   Although we have many people come with these who very much enjoy the garden it is worth considering that 13 acres on slope means it would be hard work to push someone the whole way around.  The more formal areas of garden nearer the entrance are wheelchair accessible and we have a disabled access map that we give people on arrival and explain.

The strength of the person pushing a wheelchair or the type of buggy, make a huge difference and can vary enormously so please bear this in mind.

Wet Weather

Wet weather particularly in Spring and Autumn when the ground might be soft make disabled access much more difficult as although we have quite a lot of hard standing paths there is the need to go across lawns at times.

Facilities
We have a big spacious disabled toilet and 2 disabled parking spots.

Tea Room

To access the Tea Room from the entrance to the garden there is a small grass slope to go down and then you can enter the Tea Room via the conservatory but there is a door threshold that must be negotiated.  If the weather is good, we do have some seating on the lawn above the Tea Room which is accessed down the small sloping lawn.

Car Parking

Our car park is a mixture of hardcore and grass parking and is a short walk from the entrance to the gardens.  Although it is only  a short walk to the entrance it is on a slope.

Dropping off at the Entrance

We often let people come down and drop disabled people off at the entrance to the garden and then return their car to the car park.  We just ask that you please come and check with the entrance staff first as it is not always safe to do so right away dependent on the number of people around.

Carers

We offer free entrance to the garden to carers when they are accompanying the person they care for.  Please bring a form of Id such as a Carers Card or National Trust Essential Companion Card to show at the entrance.
